Crazy Two Days..

It's been an exhausting two days for the TRS Indians as they fell to Southern on Friday, 13-3, in a Shore Conference Class A South contest - but then came back to defeat Monsignor Donovan and Southern Regional on Saturday in the first two rounds of the Ocean County Tournament.

South defeated the Griffins, 5-0, in the opening round behind the strong pitching of freshman Tyler Gebler who was making his first career start at TR South. Gebler (2-1) struck out 9, walked none and allowed only 3 hits as he dominated the Mon Don (3-11) hitters. Joe Talerico provided all the offense South would need as he followed a bases loaded walk to DH Kyle Lamar with a Grand Slam homer to left field. Talerico had hit a two-run homer against Southern on Friday. He now has 6 this season.

The Indians (12-2 overall, 4-2 in A South) took care of business in the second game as they got up early on the Rams (7-7) and held on for the win. Senior righty Evan Bigler dominated the Southern hitters as he struck out 9 and walked none. Offensively, senior catcher Casey Chant had a key RBI single as did junior DH Steve Wagenhoffer and freshman shortstop Tyler Gebler. Southern's Ray Keelan (the grandson of the former TR Intermediate West coach) took the loss.

Sophomore Ryan Kapp contributed with an important defensive play as he hit cutoff man Mark Perry with a throw from rightfield that nailed a Southern baserunner at the plate.

South will take on the Rams again on Tuesday at Southern.

On Friday, South allowed 15 hits and 13 runs as the Rams broke open a 5-3 game in the top of the sixth.

South Finish...

Congratulations to the Toms River South baseball team for pulling off a stunning come from behind victory against Brick Memorial yesterday in a key Shore Conference Class A South match up.

Senior leftfielder Rick Petrosino ripped the game winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game as he drove in Mark Perry, who had doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Perry was one of the heroes of the seventh inning when the 10 and 1 Indians scored two runs to tie the game at three. After sophomore Ryan Kapp ripped a solo home run to make the game 3 to 2, Perry singled in pinch runner Tim O’Brien to send it into extra innings.

Junior pitcher Marc Potter pitched eight and one-third innings of strong baseball and he was relieved by senior Evan Bigler, who got South out of the ninth inning. Bigler picked up the win to make his record 5 and 0. Junior Joe Talerico got the Indians on the board early, drilling a solo home run in the third inning to tie the game at one.

South has now won nine games in a row and they will host Southern tomorrow at 3:15 p.m. before competing in the Ocean County Tournament this weekend.
